Is Xiaomi’s Camping Lantern Right for UAE Trips?
Share
A camping lantern and a torch solve different problems. The Xiaomi Multi-function Camping Lantern combines both, with a broad main light for a table or tent and a removable secondary light you can carry. For UAE shoppers, the important question is whether that flexibility justifies its size, price and care requirements.
Quick answer
Yes—this is a strong choice for car camping, desert evenings, balcony use and power-cut backup when you want comfortable area lighting rather than only a narrow beam. The detachable 120-lumen flashlight, adjustable white and RGB light, Bluetooth control and USB-C charging make it more versatile than a basic lantern.
It is less suitable if you need a pocket torch, a waterproof light for heavy rain, or a product that can stay in a very hot parked car. At the time of writing, DG Gadget lists the Global version at AED 157 with stock available; price and availability can change.
What you get
| Feature | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| Main light | Adjustable from 6 to 230 lumens for low-level ambience or brighter campsite lighting |
| Detachable light | 120-lumen forward flashlight or 70-lumen side light |
| Colour options | Warm white, cool white and RGB effects |
| Batteries | 4800mAh main battery plus 800mAh in the detachable light |
| Charging | USB-C; about 210 minutes for the main unit and 150 minutes for the secondary light |
| Protection | IP54 dust and splash resistance—not immersion protection |
| Size and weight | 198 × 114 × 123mm and approximately 565g |
These figures come from Xiaomi’s official product specifications.
Why the two-light design is useful
A normal lantern lights a shared area but is awkward when someone needs to walk away from camp. Here, the smaller light lifts out of the main unit, so one light can remain on the table while the other becomes a handheld torch or hanging side light. Returning it to the main body automatically charges it and switches it off.
That arrangement is especially practical for family camping: you do not have to choose between illuminating the tent and finding something in the car. The tradeoff is bulk. At about 565g, this is easy to pack in a vehicle but is not designed to replace a lightweight hiking headlamp.
Will 230 lumens be bright enough?
For close-range campsite tasks, dining, cards or lighting the inside of a tent, a broad 230-lumen lantern is usually more useful than a very bright narrow beam. The output spreads around the unit instead of concentrating far ahead.
The removable flashlight is rated at 120 lumens, so it is best treated as a convenient path and task light—not a long-range searchlight. If your priority is spotting distant objects, you should choose a dedicated high-output torch instead.
Do you need the Xiaomi Home app?
No. The lantern’s buttons and rotary control handle everyday power, brightness, colour temperature and mode changes. Bluetooth adds convenience: Xiaomi says the app can customise colours and scenes, set delayed switch-off and control supported lighting modes.
Direct phone control works over Bluetooth. Xiaomi’s official lantern FAQ explains that remote smart-home control requires a compatible Bluetooth mesh gateway. That distinction matters if you expect to operate it while away from the campsite or home.
Important UAE heat and water limits
IP54 means protection against dust ingress and splashes under specified test conditions. It does not make the lantern waterproof. Do not immerse it, leave it exposed to rain, or place it where it could fall into water.
Heat deserves equal attention in the UAE. Xiaomi states a normal operating range of -10°C to 45°C and a charging range of 0°C to 45°C. Do not store or charge the lantern in a parked vehicle, direct summer sun or another place that may exceed those limits. Let a hot unit cool in a shaded, ventilated room before charging.
Charging and packing checklist
- Charge both parts before leaving; the main lantern takes about three and a half hours.
- Pack a USB power source that can provide 5V/2A. A USB-C cable is included, but Xiaomi says a power adapter is not supplied.
- Confirm that the detachable light is seated and charging in the main body.
- Keep the charging port and contacts dry and free from sand.
- Use a padded compartment so the clear outer shell and controls are not crushed by heavier gear.
- Test the light before sunset rather than setting it up for the first time in the dark.
Who should buy it?
Choose it if: you camp by car, host outdoor evenings, want adjustable ambience, or need one rechargeable light that can cover a table, tent and short walk.
Skip it if: you need a waterproof storm lantern, an ultralight backpacking light, a long-distance torch, or a device you can safely leave in extreme vehicle heat.
Verdict
The Xiaomi Multi-function Camping Lantern is most convincing as a flexible area light, not as the brightest torch. Its broad adjustable glow, detachable secondary light and optional app control suit UAE desert evenings and home backup use well. Respect the IP54 and 45°C limits, and it offers a thoughtful balance of practical lighting and atmosphere without requiring the app for basic operation.
