Do You Need Xiaomi Smart Home Hub 2 for Smart Plug 2?
Share
Short answer: no. The Xiaomi Smart Plug 2 (Wi-Fi) connects directly to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and the Xiaomi Home app, so it does not need Xiaomi Smart Home Hub 2 for its normal remote switching, schedules, countdowns or power statistics. The hub becomes useful when you want to connect compatible Zigbee or Bluetooth Mesh accessories, or build supported local automations across several smart-home devices.
Smart Plug 2 or Smart Home Hub 2: what does each one do?
| Device | Main job | Network connection | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Smart Plug 2 (Wi-Fi) | Turns power to one connected appliance on or off and adds app-based controls | Direct 2.4GHz Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 5.0 is also listed in Xiaomi's specifications | A lamp, fan or another compatible appliance you want to schedule or control remotely |
| Xiaomi Smart Home Hub 2 | Connects and coordinates compatible Zigbee, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Mesh devices | 2.4GHz or 5GHz Wi-Fi, or 10/100Mbps Ethernet | A wider Xiaomi Home setup with sensors, switches and supported local scenes |
Xiaomi's official Smart Plug 2 setup guide tells you to power the plug, add it in Xiaomi Home and connect it to your Wi-Fi. There is no hub step. You can check the official Smart Plug 2 product page and official specifications for the current setup details and ratings.
Choose the Smart Plug 2 alone when…
- You only want to automate one appliance. The plug can handle remote on/off control, schedules, countdowns and electricity-use statistics through Xiaomi Home.
- Your router provides 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. The plug does not list 5GHz Wi-Fi support, so it must be added to a compatible 2.4GHz network.
- You do not need Zigbee sensors or switches. A hub would add cost without being required for the plug's core functions.
At the time of this check on 30 October 2026, the Smart Plug 2 was listed by DG Gadget at AED 45 and available to order. Price and availability can change, so check the current Smart Plug 2 product page before buying.
Add Smart Home Hub 2 when…
- You plan to use compatible Zigbee or Bluetooth Mesh accessories. Xiaomi lists these protocols, plus Bluetooth 5.0, for the hub.
- You want several devices to work together. For example, a compatible sensor could trigger a supported Xiaomi Home scene rather than leaving every device as a separate app control.
- You want a wired network option. Smart Home Hub 2 includes a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port as well as dual-band Wi-Fi. The Ethernet cable is sold separately.
- Supported local scenes matter to you. Xiaomi says preset local automations can continue during a network error, although this is not available for every device or scene. Check the exact automation in Xiaomi Home before relying on it.
For its supported protocols, ports and setup steps, see Xiaomi's official Smart Home Hub 2 page and official specifications. DG Gadget listed the Xiaomi Smart Home Hub 2 – White (Global) at AED 145 and available to order when this guide was checked on 30 October 2026; current price and availability may change.
Important UAE socket check
The Smart Plug 2 sold here has round pins and a recessed round-pin socket. UAE wall outlets normally use Type G, so this plug does not connect directly to a standard UAE Type G socket. You need a suitable grounded adapter, and the lowest rating among the wall outlet, adapter, smart plug and connected appliance becomes the practical limit.
The official plug rating is 220–240V, up to 16A and 3680W for resistive loads, but that does not make every adapter or appliance combination suitable. Do not use an ungrounded or loosely fitting adapter, and do not exceed any component's voltage, current or power rating. The Smart Home Hub 2 does not solve this socket issue; it is a connectivity hub, not a plug converter.
Three checks before you buy
- Check the appliance. Confirm its voltage and maximum load are compatible, and remember that switching the power supply is not the same as controlling every feature on the appliance.
- Check your Wi-Fi and app region. Smart Plug 2 needs 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Device availability and compatible scenes can vary by Xiaomi Home region, so keep devices intended to work together in the same supported region.
- Check the physical connection. Allow room for the plug body and use an appropriately rated grounded Type G adapter in the UAE.
Which setup should you choose?
For one Wi-Fi smart plug, buy the Smart Plug 2 alone. It already connects to Xiaomi Home through your router. Choose Smart Home Hub 2 only if your plan includes compatible Zigbee/Bluetooth devices, a larger set of scenes, or the hub's Ethernet option. Buying both does not remove the plug's 2.4GHz Wi-Fi requirement or its need for a suitable UAE Type G adapter.
